Ally Wallace : FACTORY LINES
Ally Wallace : Factory Lines
Opens at MERZ, Queens Road at 6:00pm Friday 8th November. All welcome.
And … open over the weekend 11.00am – 4:00pm Saturday 9th & Sunday 10th November.
Ally has been our artist in residence at MERZ since September 2019. Focusing on the representation of buildings Ally has followed – through drawing and printing – the story of the McGeorge knitters, from the first floor extension that once stood behind Whigham’s Inn, moving to the former works in Buccleuch Street and finally to the imposing but now derelict ‘Glove’ Factory that stands beside Sanquhar Station.
In conversations with former knitters Ally has incorporated knitted and embroidered elements into a subtle exhibition that draws attention to the details in buildings and plays on the way they are lit. These are local buildings we tend to ignore or take for granted and Ally reveals the stories behind their facades.
Included with Ally’s work are two embroidered drawings from his exercise in making a ‘5 minute drawing’. Ally held a class with Primary Six. The kids voted on which drawings should be embroidered as part of work on democracy being undertaken by Jade Davidson for Sanquhar Kids Council.
So come along on Friday for a glass of wine (or juice) and hear Ally talk about his residency experience in Sanquhar … or pop by over the weekend.
